Continuing through my journey through this massive box we arrive at three six's second proper full length Hollow. Hollow has everything I would expect from a follow up to an album such as Hypersona. It sounds like the logical continuation of the musical foundations laid by the previous album.
Hollow continues the slow and simple minimalism that was found on Hypersona, there is a shift in the tone however. Whereas Hypersona was melancholy, Hollow shifts more to hopelessness and maybe even a bit of dread. The songs sound quite a bit darker on the whole, and while there are many moments where it breaks out of that mold, whenever I listen to the album as a whole I am always left with this lasting impression that I have gone through someones dark night of the soul.
I remember listening to this album many years ago on streaming services and not liking it as much as Hypersona. Revisiting it now, I'm not sure what I was thinking back then. This album channels exceptionally strong emotions in a way that many other albums have not and can not. The album sounds like a cry for help from a dying individual who has nothing left. It's a powerful statement.
Hollow is an excellent album. While I don't think that I enjoy it as much as the debut from 36, it is still something I know I will come back to when I want to listen to music that channels these specific emotions.
