Entry 317 - Kvadrat - Ψυχική Αποσύνθεση

I grabbed this one at a local shop yesterday at the recommendation of one of the dudes that worked there. It was billed as a dissonant extreme metal EP that would be right up my alley. For the most part that description is accurate.

The band does indeed play highly reverbed dissonant black/death metal. The riffs weave in and out between simple melodies and dissonant chords. What the band does exceptionally well is make all of those concepts work well together within the context of the song.

Another thing the band does well is maintain a sense of urgency over the 20 minutes of the record. The first track in particular has several riffs that caught and held my attention, including a fantastic section of a semi melodic riff over a d-beat. Killer stuff.

The album has a strong emphasis on atmosphere as well. During all of the songs there is a moment where most everything stops and a singular instrument plays distantly. For an EP this short that adds character, I would like to see them branch out a bit more if they were to release a full length though.

Overall this is a cool surprise. The first track is far and above my favorite of the four, but all four are strong in their own right. Not a bad recommendation.
