Entry 378 - Shovel Knight Treasure Trove - Part 1 - Shovel Knight

I have an inventory of all my records. It's a large spreadsheet that chronicles what I have and when I listened to the records last. There is also a column that indicates wither or not I have listened to a record long enough to form an opinion. If the record has ? in it then I haven't listened enough to it. I'm currently on a quest to eliminate as many ? from that column as possible.

Today's entry comes from the fact that all of the Treasure Trove records have a question mark. These were some of the very first video game music records that I added to my collection, and unfortunately when I got them I spun each of them once and then put the boxed set away. That is changing with these listens.

The base game to Shovel Knight was one of my favorite indie games that I played in a long time. A big part of my enjoyment came from the fact that the soundtrack was absolutely killer.

Shovel Knight's music channels that 80's chip tune sound without the technical limitations of the NES or the Sega Master System. The synths here are rich and full and don't suffer from the compression that so many other NES soundtracks do.

Admittedly I don't like a lot of the NES soundtracks as stand alone albums. I think I can count on one hand the amount that I actually like, and even less that I own on vinyl. What Shovel Knight does is take that sound set, and morph it into a modern soundtrack.

What I mean is that it sounds like it could be in the NES era of soundtracks, but it is so much more than that. The songs are more detailed, the synths are richer, there is more thought put into how everything flows together. This all adds up into a soundtrack that surpasses being just a soundtrack and becomes a fantastic album to listen to in it's own right.

While I don't remember much of the remainder of the Treasure Trove, this first album brings back a lot of fond memories that makes me want to go back and play the game all over again. I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the remaining three albums that came in the box.
