Entry 330 - Anoice - Ghost in the Clocks

I've been saying this a lot lately, but I honestly cannot believe that I have this record in my collection. I've been into Anoice for many years at this point, and somewhere along the lines Ghost in the Clocks got a vinyl pressing... then it sold out. Secondary market prices were astronomical so I gave up... then it got repressed.

What is currently adorning my turntable is the repress of one of their best albums. Anoice play neo-classical music in the style of post-rock. Replace the guitars with violins, replace the bass with a piano, you get Anoice. It's a blueprint for a musical style that shows a ton of potential. Over the years the band has experimented with a lot of different sounds, but here on Ghost in the Clocks the band tapped into something special.

Ghost in the Clocks is an album that has a deep emotional impact on me whenever I listen to it. The music balances the fine line between melancholy and hope. Despair and light. Joy and isolation. There is as much light here as there is darkness... the balance is nearly perfect. The songs will switch effortlessly from a minor key to a swelling major key crescendo and the slowly fall back into the minor to end things off. It's near perfection for neo-classical.

I'm finding that as I grow older and become more in tune with the music I truly enjoy that violin driven ambient music is one of my absolute favorite combinations. It's probably what drew me to this band in the first place when I heard them, and it's what keeps me coming back. The band demonstrates absolute mastery of composition and mood with this release. I couldn't be happier right now.
