Entry 395 - Insomnium - Since the Day it All Came Down

This album came at the perfect time for me. When I was much younger, one of the first real metal genres I gravitated towards was the budding melodic death metal scene coming out of Sweden. Dark Tranquillity and In Flames were two of my all time favorite bands in the mid to late 90's.

Fast forward a few years and both those bands began to experiment. Dark Tranquillity started to incorporate clean vocals and electronics, In Flames started to include more nu metal into their sound. Both bands were no longer what I wanted to listen to anymore. Sure I still had their classic albums but I wanted more in that style.

Fast forward a few years and I had all but given up on the genre. I was at a local record store and I found a cool looking cover (this album), I bought it as a blind buy. When I got home I plopped it into my CD player and was completely blown away. Instantly fell in love with this unknown band.

Insomnium obviously play melodic death metal. Not only do they embrace all the Iron Maiden inspired melodies from the Swedish scene, but they also inject that trademark mournful tone that only the citizens of Finland can do. The combination infused some much needed life into a genre I thought dead.

The album has it's highs and lows. There are a few songs that could be considered fillers, but even those have a riff, a keyboard passage or something to help it stand out. When the album hits though, watch the fuck out.

The song Bereavement is one of my favorite melodic death metal compositions of all time. The song takes the old style In Flames riffing and adds in mountains of atmosphere and melancholy. The instrumental in the middle of the song in particular still gives me goosebumps. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, it's as close to perfection as a melodic death metal song can get.

Since the Day It All Came Down is one of those albums that reinvigorated me on a genre that I thought I had grown out of. Even to this day Insomnium hits my turntable at least a few times a year. In many ways they have taken the place of the bands that I had idolized before them.
