Last night I decided to put on this record and I didn't immediately hate hit, so it stayed on the table. I kept listening and for the first time in a day or two I actually had something I wanted to listen to. I guess minimalist ambient video game music was the genre to go for.
Out of all the records that came out for Breath of the Wild, I think that this one captures the core feel of the game the most. So much of the game is going from place to place on the map searching for the sake of searching. During those times the music is minimal, and the true majesty of the game is revealed through organic game play.
The music on Tales of Exploration and Discovery captures that feeling of wandering around from place to place, wondering what is around the next corner. Is it danger? Is it a new shrine? Is it a puzzle that I'll spend the next hour on? Whatever it is Breath of the Wild rewards your curiosity, and so does this record.
This is the first video game record I've listened to and truly enjoyed for a very long time. It feels much more like a proper album than it does a soundtrack, and that is a true rarity in the genre.
