I corrected a terrible mistake. I had a chance to get this record years ago and passed on it for wherever stupid reason. It was recently repressed, so I corrected my mistake the instant I knew about the record being available again.
My first exposure to Porter Robinson was through the song Sad Machine. The intro played and I instantly hit skip on the mix that I was listening to. After a song or two I thought better of it and went back to listen to the song with the strange intro... and I'm so glad I did.
On Worlds Porter Robinson plays a rather unique form of progressive EDM... maybe this is IDM... I don't know. I'm not versed enough in electronic genres to know what this classifies as... I just know it's damn good.
I had this idea that there was a grand story going on where the last human on earth comes across an innocent AI and wakes her up again. The story then focuses on the AI learning about the horrible past between humans and androids. This ended up being nothing near what was intended by the songs from listening to the album commentary from Porter, but you know what, I like the idea so I'm sticking with it.
The album starts off innocent and cheery and slowly morphs into a deeper and more contemplative album. By the time Sea of Voices and Fellow Feeling come around the album has completely morphed into a sorrowful landscape with only death and destruction left. Most of the tracks are instrumental or minimal on lyrics, so this transition is almost entirely musical... masterful work.
If Worlds came out in 2013 or 2015 it would be album of the year... it just happened to come out the same year as Dangerous Days... so this falls in the second place for the year. Still, this is one of the best albums for the decade and I am exceptionally happy that I corrected my earlier mistake.
