Entry 338 - Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance

In the next entry on albums that desperately needed a repress we have Nile with Black Seeds of Vengeance.

I remember when Nile first hit the metal scene in the late 90's. Everyone was going nuts over them and I couldn't figure out why so many people were into their debut full length. It wasn't until Black Seeds of Vengeance came out that I started to understand how incredibly good their Egyptian tinged death metal was.

After a brief dark ambient intro the title track comes in and starts to rip your fucking face off. My first listen of the song I felt like it was more of the same until the last section of the song where the title is chanted over and over again and the entire structure and atmosphere of the song changes. It becomes darker, more structured, and melody is introduced in such a way that the song naturally draws your attention and simply becomes better. It puts the listener on notice that this is not simply Amongst the Ruins... part II.

It doesn't just end with the title track. Every track from this point forward incorporates tasteful melodic passages in addition to the blistering death metal that was present on the debut. The combination is what elevates this album from fair to good death metal to a new level of excellence. The ambient sections are not filler in this album, no they are an essential part to the sound that Nile have honed and perfected on Black Seeds.

While this isn't the best album that Nile put out, it certainly laid the groundwork for the masterpiece that was to follow. It's a pretty damn fine slice of death metal and easily stands the test of time.
