Ever have a record in your collection that you have no idea how it got there? I was going through my collection this morning and I came across this one, and I have z e r o clue where it came from or what it is. My nose just said "ambient" and that was all I had to go off.
Well first off that description is accurate, this is an ambient album. This particular ambient style revolves around one concept: resonance.
Every composition in the album has this resonating, vibrating feel to it. It's like the music has found its on harmonic frequency and is causing an uneasy stir to the entire music. I've heard this concept before in songs, but never for an entire album. It's an interesting central concept to say the least.
The songs themselves vary between soft and gentile (while still maintaining that unease), to overtly abrasive... fully embracing the unease that the resonant tones bring. The balance between the two is skewed greatly towards the gentle side. This only amplifies the effect of the album when it goes into harsher territory; it's rare therefor it sticks out more.
The album isn't that long, a single LP's worth of music. I put this on yesterday for the first time in a long while (maybe first time ever?) and have been trying to dissect it since.
I had a conversation with a good friend a few days ago where we were lamenting the days where we could find an album and keep it on the turntable for a time... a time to really digest what the album was trying to say to us. I may not be able to do that with every album I have, but at least for this one record I felt like I was able to go back to the times when I really spent time with a record to see what secrets it held. Something I really need to do more often.
