I must be in an excessively brutal mood today. I hardly ever listen to this much death metal in a row, let alone this much brutal stuff.
Wormed play unapologetically heavy brutal death metal. The "gimmick" to the band is that everything is science fiction based. Honestly I don't hear much of the science fiction angle in the album outside of a few seconds here and there. Most of this is straight up brutal death metal, good brutal death metal.
All of the tropes of the genre are here: deep guttural vocals, technical heavy riffs, tons of tempo changes, and nasty as shit breakdowns. Wormed fall squarely into the category of "nothing is really revolutionary here, but it's done so well that I have to take notice." While the music isn't very original within the genre, it's just plain sick.
A lot of the riffs on the album focus entirely on being as brutal and as heavy as possible. Start/stop staccato type riffs are all over the place, but they don't have a djent type feel. Instead they flow easily into each other and as a consequence grind the listener to absolute dust.
A welcome surprise on the album was the inclusion of a (mostly) instrumental track. It's varied and is rather rare for this type of band. It injects a bit of melody into the albums flow to break up the onslaught. It's the last song of the album so it lets the listener down gently after thirty minutes of annihilation.
This is one of less than ten brutal death metal albums I have in my collection. For whatever reason Wormed have stood out to me over several years at this point. Solid work.
