Entry 380 - Remember - A Deep Dive Into the Conflicted and Scarred Psyche

Out of all the records that I had on order, this was the one I was looking forward to the most. This album represents a huge shift in Remember's sound from pure dreampunk to something that brought in influences from deep dubstep and moved his sound in a much darker direction.

While the basis for Deep Dive is still rooted within the dreampunk genre, this is obviously something more. From the initial moments of I Woke Up At 3am and Realized the music is immediately darker and more brooding than any of Remember's previous works. The song begins to build and incorporate familiar dreampunk tones, however instead of a dream it sounds a bit more like a nightmare.

As the song and album continue the album continues to work in darker undertones accented by sound design directly influenced from the deep dubstep genre. The nuance of the dream/nightmare like melodies is offset by the overt bass and bottom end from the dubstep genre.

Do note that this has nothing to do with the brostep genre that was popularized in the early 2010's by Skrillix. This is much more akin to something like DJ Distance. It's quite a large difference when the two are played back to back.

The different ways that these two genres are fused on Deep Dive makes me wonder why this hasn't happened previously. The combination is so seamless and natural on the album that it feels like a natural evolution of both.

When this album first released I was hoping that this would be the direction that Remember continued to take his project. With the recent release of Show Me, Enlighten Me, Love Me this has been shown to be the case. I love the fusion of two seemingly unrelated genres to venture into territory that not many artists or projects have ventured into in the past.

With these last two releases Remember has gone from an interesting artist to someone who's new albums I will check out every single time. I may or may not like them, but I do know that they will be interesting and demand my attention. This is the future of electronic music that I want to see.
