Entry 349 - Ison - Andromeda Skyline

I had no idea who Ison were three weeks ago. They came up in a recommendation one of the digital musical sources that I use and so I gave it a listen... very glad I did.

Ison play ambient driven post rock that has a heavy emphasis on ethereal female vocals and p o w e r f u l riffs when they are present. Most of the album is quite subdued and spacey, and even when it gets heavy it never feels rushed or urgent. Its perfect to close your eyes to and let the album whisk you away.

I'm not even sure I could put this in the post rock genre to be honest. Sure the band uses all the tropes of what makes a good post-rock song, but this feels much more like a guitar driven ambient album to me. The way the vocals are utilized and the way the riffs are constructed lend this more of an inclusion in the ranks of ambient music rather than any genre of rock.

The massive title track in particular is a stand out. Its nearly fifteen minutes long and it builds over the course of the first few minutes to this massive swell where the vocalist shares that she is looking up to the Andromeda Skyline. That section feels like the culmination of the entire album in one passage. It's fantastic.

Even though I can't really decide on a genre for the release, the whole thing is incredibly well put together and executed. The way the vocals interplay with the instruments and the ambience is right up my alley, and I'm looking forward to exploring more of what these guys have to offer.
