Entry 350 - Abyssic - High the Memory

Out of all the records I own I don't think I own any that sound like this. Abyssic play a combination of doom (bordering on funeral doom), death metal, black metal, with heavy symphonic elements. Sounds like an absolute mess... it's not.

How this ends up sounding in practice is actually quite cool. The riffs are slow and drawn out, the drums plod forward at a near funeral doom pace (with bursts of speed), keyboards soar over with multiple layers of synthesized orchestra, and the vocals bellow from the deepest depths.

The songs are long... excessively long. Ranging anywhere from 8 to 21 minutes long... I mean the album is five songs long and is almost 80 minutes, not many bands can claim that. The songs use their length to good use, many offering many movements and sections. By the end of the songs it feels more like an orchestral suite, just played with metal instrumentation instead of a full orchestra.

Abyssic have carved out a unique corner of the metal world. Their sound is something I have not heard from any other band. They have been around for quite a few years at this point and no copy cats have sprung up, so they really are going into uncharted territory with their music. They are a band I will keep my eyes on to see what direction they take this hodge podge of genres. Fascinating band.
