Entry 310 - Mourning Sun - Ultimo Exhariario

Mourning Sun to my knowledge only have this one album. They play female fronted doom metal that has the spirit of an old soul. I'll try to explain what I mean.

The doom that these guys play isn't trying to be classic doom, it's not trying to be funeral doom... it's just doom. The riffs are slow, but not too slow... the music has life to it, much like a tree ent moving through a forest, it is full of life... it just takes a bit to get to the destination.

The riffs are highly melodic and counteract the vocalist's performance nicely. They both have a way of lingering in the best way possible... you expect them to end at a certain point but they stay for just a few extra moments. This adds to the "old soul" effect that I alluded to earlier... the music feels ancient, yet entirely modern at the same time.

Outside of the doom, there is considerable attention given to ambient sections. In fact the opener to the album is almost entirely acoustic with female vocals. Many of the interludes rely heavily on a slow build of atmosphere before the metal kicks back in. The fact that they are given so much detail makes the doom sections even stronger as they contrast the quieter sections exceptionally well.

Mourning Sun have successfully captured the essence of epic doom metal in this release. They are not trying to do anything outside of that realm either. They are simply content in their existence, and in doing so have created an album that I always remember fondly and enjoy every time I revisit it.
