Entry 396 - Zyklon - World Ov Worms

The first time I saw this album my thought was "what the hell is this?" The cover is some sort of weird alternative matrix fantasy and the band picture literally made me laugh out loud. I didn't realize it at the time, but this was where Sammoth and Trym from Emperor landed after the band split.

After finding out that small little detail, I immediately went to pick up World Ov Worms. I didn't know what to expect. The only information I knew about it going in was that Trym was dissatisfied with how much restraint he had to put in on the last Emperor album, and in Zyklon he went to remedy that.

Zyklon play an incredibly intense fusion of three genres: black metal, death metal, and industrial. The industrial aspects of the music are highly limited to a few moments in the album, but when they are utilized they are done so exceedingly well.

The end of Chaos Deathcult comes to mind as the most overt example of this. Most of the song is a brutal onslaught of black metal played with death metal intensity. As the song winds to a close the metal is replaced by a slow electronic bass drum and vocal samples detailing the nature of god, satan, and man. It's an incredible outro and possibly the best moment on the album.

Much of the album continues in the black metal played in the style of death metal format. The riffs only have one goal: to absolutely annihilate anyone listening. The drums are here to match, the bit about Trym wanting to go full blast again is true - the dude takes no prisoners on the album.

The vocals are the only really lacking part here. They are provided by Daemon from Limbonic Art. Most of them are delivered almost in a shouted, hardcore style. Sometimes he will go into his more typical black metal shriek, but those moments are few and far between. It's a shame, because he's quite the excellent vocalist in his main band.

Despite my initial reaction to the band, Zyklon put out a solid black/death metal album. It's not a world changing album, but it doesn't need to be. It knows exactly what it's goals are, and it accomplishes them well.
