Entry 360 - Darkthrone - Panzerfaust

Transylvanian Hunger is a strange album for me. I acknowledge that it is incredibly important for the black metal scene, and I realize that it is hugely popular... it just isn't for me. For the life of me I cannot get into that record, even after trying dozens of times.

Panzerfaust on the other hand... this album may very well be my favorite Darkthrone. It's everything that Transylvanian Hunger is not. It's slow and brooding, the vocals are pushed way to the front, and the riffs are more chord based rather than single not tremolo picking.

The band cite Celtic Frost as the primary influence for this album and I hear it. The only thing missing is Nocturno Culto going "ugh" at the end of a verse line. The riffs are a complete tribute to To Mega Therion and Morbid Tales.

Some of the songs contain remnants of Transylvanian Hunger, only done better. En vind av sorg sounds like it could be lifted right off the previous album, but the riffs are better and more engaging. They are just as simple... just put together better. I wish I had more of an explanation of "they are neat" but it really comes down to that. They are just subjectively better for me.

The real highlight of the album is Quintessence. This thing is massive, abrasive, slow, and harsh as a mother fucker. It carries the torch of early Celtic Frost riffing like no other song on the record.

Darkthrone would continue to evolve their sound and never revisit this style in future recordings. I have nothing but respect for this band. They have always done their own thing, and even if I don't care for the record their fuck you attitude is enough to keep me coming back to see what they release next.
