Entry 334 - Pilori - Quand bien même l'enfer et le déluge s'abattraient sur nous

A few minutes ago I finished my first full listen of this album. I think I got an uppercut to the jaw and got knocked senseless.

Pilori play a combination of death metal, hardcore (specifically d-beat), and grind. Any one of those genres would be intense enough on their own, but the combination here amps things up to another level all together.

The album lasts a total of 30 minutes and every. single. moment. is used to maximum effect. There is no fat on this album, no intros, no interludes, not a single moment that is not out to absolutely obliterate the listener... well almost.

The thing that surprised me the most about this album however was not the intensity, but the variety of music that is found. There are a few select moments on the album where the band pull back just a few moments and let the listener breathe. The end of side A for instance has a beautiful piano outro. Other parts allow for a more atmospheric approach for a few moments, and the last song of the album is much much slower than the remaining songs.

This thing really aims to beat the listener into submission as much as possible. It's exceptionally well executed, and the album length is perfect for this kind of music. This was another recent blind purchase based on the label (total dissonance worship) and cover, it did not disappoint.
