Entry 381 - The Crown - Royal Destroyer

Ever since Deathrace King, The Crown has been a band that I want to check out their new material from. It's not always good, but there is always at least a song or two that makes me wanna bang my head.

When Royal Destroyer came out I was pretty excited. Cobra Speed Venom was their best they had put out in many many years, and I wanted to see if they could keep the momentum up.

I will say that Royal Destroyer is full of energy and fast paced tracks. The combination of death metal and thrash is on full display here and they fully embrace both genres. Johann's vocals are on point as well. I just feel like something is missing from this one.

With a lot of their best work there is a spark, an energy that takes it from a cool record to a record that wants to rip your fucking face off. I only get that on a few tracks here, mostly towards the end of the record.

Scandinavian Satan is exactly what I'm talking about. It's brutal, its in your face, it's got just a touch of melody, and it's got a huge sense of urgency that not all the tracks on Royal Destroyer have. The song kicks ass ten ways from Sunday and gives absolutely zero shit's if you are ready or not, it's coming.

That's not to say that most of the album is bad, it's just mediocre. It's a fun record to put on when I need some death/thrash, but it's not going to be one that hits the table often. I have Deathrace King and Royal Destroyer for that.
