Entry 367 - Sable

Here is yet another game that I have not played but own the soundtrack to. And yet again, this is not just a soundtrack, but a fantastic album in its own right.

Sable is a clinic in how to create simple, effective, and peaceful music. Whenever this one hits my turntable I am almost immediately put into a state of reflection and begin to process the trials of the day or help me relax after those trials have already passed.

The way the music unfolds throughout the 80+ minutes of the two records front loads all the vocal tracks to the start of the album. After that calming instrumental after calming instrumental take over. Many of these tracks are labeled day/night for what I presume is the same area. These variations on a theme help increase my engagement with the album as my mind begins to pick up similarities between melodies.

This album also has the benefit of making each side of each record feel like a self contained piece. Side A is mostly vocal driven, side B dives head first into that peaceful ambience described above. Side C has more of a sense of curiosity, and side D tries to wrap things up. I say tries because out of all the music on here, most of the stuff that falls a little flat comes on side D. Three out of four excellent sides though is more than enough to warrant this a place in the collection.

Despite the lackluster ending to the album Sable is a highly enjoyable album. Every time I put it on I'm reminded why I enjoy this type of music so much. Hopefully next time it will be less time between spins.
