Entry 357 - Slayer - Reign in Blood

The mind is a crazy thing. I forget too often how fantastic the truly great albums are. As a rule I don't like thrash, but like all good rules they are meant to be broken... Reign in Blood obliterates this rule.

There was an interview I read years and years ago where the band had written about 45 minutes worth of material for their third record. They went to lay down the drum tracks and Mr. Lombardo had all the songs tracked at about 29 minutes. It was then that the band realized they needed to up their game and speed up the riffs... and Reign in Blood was born.

Like many of the all time great albums, there is very little I can say about this album that has not already been shared. From beginning to end there is not one moment that is wasted on this album. The band is so intense with the riffs on this album that it puts many death metal albums to shame.

This album is the blueprint for how to be aggressive. There is no better album within the thrash genre, and there are few albums within the metal genre as a whole that are better than this. The way that all of the riffs are structured make this seem like one half an hour long song, and that is just fine by me.

30 minutes is the prefect length for an album like this. Anything more and it feels like its overstaying its welcome, anything less and it feels too lean. 30 minutes is perfect, just like this record is.
