Entry 1559 - Nie No Hakoniwa - Dollhouse of Offerings

Style: video game music

Primary Emotions/Themes: death, birth, horrors beyond comprehension

Thoughts: There is a genre of visual novel that I can't get into. It's deeply disturbing beyond anything that I can handle. This is the realm that Dollhouse of Offerings lies.

Disturbing story and visuals is one thing... disturbing music is another. I will spend ample amount of time listening to music that evokes the same emotions as the visuals and I will actually enjoy my time spent there.

The soundtrack to Dollhouse of Offerings is akin to someone who was once a normal human being but slowly descends into a depraved state of madness. The album starts with seemingly normal slice of life anime type music. Slowly though there is this insidious darkness that creeps in. A small melody here, a hint towards a minor key there. It's slow, deliberate and incredibly menacing.

By the end of the album we have almost no melody and the music has devolved into noises and harrowing sounds. This is no longer a slice of life, but rather a nightmare that was birthed from the horrors of the game.

I can't play games like this, they stick with me for eons and I am fundamentally perturbed by them. The music is something that I can enjoy though. I get the emotions without the scarring effect of the story, and that is completely fine with me.
