Entry 1554 - Thangorodrim - The Darkening of Valinor

Style: classic dungeon synth

Primary Emotions/Themes: the death of light

Thoughts: Ungoliant. A creature of untold darkness. A creature that is said to have consumed light wherever she went. A creature so feared that even Morgoth - the father of all evil in Middle Earth tread cautiously around her.

The Valinor - two trees that basked the world in light. A place of utter tranquility and peace, the bastion of hope and life unto the world. The is where the  Maiar called home.

It was only natural then for a creature of absolute darkness to loathe that which gave out the greatest light in the world. Through the persuasion of Morgoth, Ungoliant attacked the Valinor and cast them into darkness... or Unlight. It was one of the bleakest moments in the history of Tolkien's legendarium.

The Darkening of Valinor chronicles this battle in musical form. As one would expect it is a dismal and minimalistic take on the genre. The melodies are simple and sparse, with most of the atmosphere being taken up by darker more atmospheric tones.

The music has a deep, all consuming feel to it - much like the unlight that Ungoliant brought. Of the four prologue records, this one is by far the most desolate of the four. Hope is lost, the light of the world is gone. Everything is lost. Nothing remains but the faintest of hope... and that seed of hope is what carries us forward - to the end of the age.
