Entry 1218 - Ranges - Cardinal Winds

Style: post rock

Primary Emotions/Themes: An instrumental, surprisingly heavy post rock exploration of melodies and atmospheres

Thoughts: To those familiar with modern post rock Ranges requires no introduction. To those that are not, Ranges explores a different path than the early bands of the genre do. Unlike bands such as Godspeed or Do Make Say Think, Ranges has more defined song structures, and relies less on instruments that are not guitar bass and drums.

The post rock come in though with the way Ranges approaches their instrumentals. The ebb and flow that is rampant in the genre is ever-present in their music. Full on distortion and huge riffs one moment only to have that fall back onto clean guitars and pianissimo drums and then back again.

The way Ranges creates their music isn't anything I haven't heard before... but... the way they are able to get this range of emotion out of just a few instruments is what amazes me about the band. They can cover such a wide range using so little, something very few bands can do. Ultimately that is what keeps me coming back to this band and this album.
