Entry 1536 - Falkenbach - Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty

Style: Viking Metal

Primary Emotions/Themes: Vikings and the glory of old

Thoughts: Falkenbach is one of the quintessential viking metal bands. They were one of the first ones doing it and they remain a favorite amongst those who delve into the genre. Despite all of this I have never been able to get into the band.

I've tried listening to Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty multiple times. I've spun the record at least a dozen times now and for the life of me I don't see the appeal. Sure all the elements of a good album are there, but the way it's put together is just not for me.

I think the opening track sums it all up for me. The music is epic and blends together soaring clean vocals with the occasional rasp. There are keyboards that compliment the guitars that play a psudo flute melody. It's in this flute melody where things just start to fall apart for me. It repeats almost the entirety of the song... all nine minutes. There are a few other things that are going on but the repetition has me begging for the song to end about half way through.

That is the essence of why I can't get into the album, it has an over reliance on simple melodies that don't need to be repeated as often as they are. There is obviously some great music on here, but I just can't get past the aspects that drag t he music down.
