Entry 1537 - Evilfeast - Isenheimen

Style: black metal

Primary Emotions/Themes: Night, winter, the dark

Thoughts: My god it's been a while. I've been wanting to get into this band for several years now. The few snippets of songs that I've heard have been excellent. Finding any of their recordings on vinyl has been a bit more of an adventure than I had anticipated. Part of that adventure is over now though and I have one of the bands EP's in my collection.

Evilfeast plays keyboard laden rawish black metal.  None of the music is particularly fast, but what it lacks in speed it more than makes up for in atmosphere. The keyboards in particular do some really heavy lifting on this release.

Each side of the album mirrors the other. The first song is an ambient/dungeon synth track (with a small bit of black metal mixed in), and then the second song will be pure black metal. I truly love the ambient tracks as they bring to mind frozen landscapes with their bright synth tones that drone on. It is enough to chill even the warmest summer day.

The black metal is also quite good, though not quite as excellent as the ambience. The guitars are produced as you would expect from a black metal band that relies heavily on atmosphere. The drums are a bit hollow for my tastes, but they work for what its worth. I think I would prefer them to be further back in the mix or be a bit less clear one way or another to truly compliment the atmosphere to be truly effective however.

Evilfeast doesn't do anything new or different here. Somehow though I don't think that that was ever the point. This is black metal played for people that enjoy the genre. It's executed exceptionally well and the atmosphere is one of the better takes on the genre I've heard in a little while. Not revolutionary, but certainly a breath of fresh (frozen) air in a sea of mediocrity.
