Entry 1527 - Lömsk - Act I

Style: atmospheric black metal

Primary Emotions/Themes: war

Thoughts: Oh wow. Where did this come from?

Lömsk play black metal, pure and simple. Their style revolves around simple riffs that are repeated and morphed throughout their songs. The songs are simple containing only a few ideas throughout their length. That description while accurate, hardly does this EP justice.

What the band truly does is take a simple idea and iterate on it throughout the entirety of the song, building it up and tearing it down in ways that are unexpected but work utterly to the bands favor. For instance Shovels and Ropes takes a simple two note riff and build it into this incredibly massive orchestral piece that is so epic that it gives me goosebumps - from two notes!

This repeats in every song. The band takes a simple idea and slowly builds on it while keeping the core in tact. A keyboard added here, building drum beat evolving into blast beats there, whatever the song requires the band is able to produce. And produce exceptionally well.

Act I is something that I have been craving even though I didn't know I needed it. Every time I listen to these twenty five minutes of music I'm immediately smitten by how absolutely outstanding their song writing is. I can't wait for more from these guys.
