Entry 1360 - Wilderun - Epigone

Style: progressive death metal

Primary Emotions/Themes: a powerful mix of folk, death and progressive metal

Thoughts: More. Everything on this album is more. More clean singing, more death metal, more folk, more better songs, more everything. Wilderun has perfected their sound.

Exhaler is an amazing acoustic song that starts off the album. It's about five minutes long and it has a light and airy sound to it... almost whimsical. It's one side of the band that they haven't explored to this extent before. This is followed up immediately by Woolgatherer a massive 15 minute epic that goes through all the different sounds of the band: heavy progressive metal, folk passages that are lead by acoustic instruments and strings, deep growled vocals counterbalanced by soaring cleans. It's more of a journey than a song.

These two songs being the first two that the listener is exposed to is very telling of what the album is: a story. The album tells a story through its music as much as it's lyrics. The twists and turns are epic and they never let you know where they are going next.

Wilderun have gotten better with each successive album. Epigone is evidence that they continue to hone and perfect their craft. I have no idea what they are going to do next, but considering their current trajectory I am eagerly anticipating it.
