Style: Instrumental hip hop
Primary Emotions/Themes: Experimentation with sounds and expectations
Thoughts: intevention_ is a fascinating producer. Their music zigs when I expect it to zag, it makes me expect the unexpected. For instance, the album starts off sounding something like the intro to a 1970's movie. The camera fades to a rising sun before everything becomes distorted. The song warps like a reel to reel tape that has gone off the spindles, and a beat is incorporated below everything before the music resumes it's calm demeanor. These warps and unexpected transitions are at the very core of what hibermature is about. It makes for a fascinating listen.
The very next track sounds like a lounge piece with a calming piano playing over a standup double bass. I can see the smoke filled lounge with the patrons chatting away sipping various cocktails. This continues for a few moments, but seemingly out of no where the melody shifts to that of a chip tunes synth for a few notes before shifting back to the lounge sound. Another unexpected turn.
This continues throughout the fifteen or so selections on the record. Peaceful compositions interrupted by strange and unexpected elements. Normally something like this would be filed into the deep archives of lofi hip hop and forgotten about for me, however these interruptions are what make the album so fascinating.
Not only does it keep me on my toes, it also keeps me engaged. I'm always wondering what is going to come next, what is the next curveball that intevention_ is going to throw at me. When it comes I'm almost always blind sided, and it's almost always an enjoyable experience. I wish more instrumental hip hop - especially that in the lofi field - would take note of this type of creativity.
